Brian Woolford's fine run in the Port Sunlight 15 miles road race showed that this Wallasey member has now attained that happy state of running with the confidence of the champion who knows that he has the mastery of the opposition.
With a fine collection of high places in top company to his credit, he is now adopting killer tactics which were nicely demonstrated last week.
Setting off at the pace of 5 mins 5 secs per mile, only club mate Ron Barlow was permitted to keep the leader company for the first of the three laps, completed in 25 minutes 25 secs.
At the second lap, run in 25 mins. 42 secs, a gap of 49 secs, had been opened, and Woolford, who is the Northern marathon champion. had no difficulty polishing off the final circuit of Higher Bebington in 25 minutes 58 secs.
This set a new course record of 77 mins 5 secs, and Barlow was beaten by 1 min 26 secs.
Tom Beesley, one of the season's recruits to long distance road racing, was well inside the first class standard for the course in fifth place in 80 mins. 54 secs., and is well on the way to redeeming Pembroke's fortunes in this class of racing.
Other local runners inside the standard were, eigth J. N. Wright (Wallasey) 83 minutes 15 secs.; 11th K H. Griffiths (Wirral) 83 mins. 39 secs.; 14th P. Maloney (Southport), 85 mins. 10 secs., and 18th L. J. Carroll (Wirral), 86 mins. 48 secs.
