Another Win for Hill at Warrington

Warrington A.C. has altered the course of its seven-miles road race each year since it was first held in 1961.

R. Hill, the A.A.A. six-miles champion, completed a hat-trick when he won the third annual race. Manchester A.C. continued its improvement by defeating Bolton U.H. and Wallasey A.C. in the team event.

Hill adopted different tactics for this race. Instead of leaving the field halfway through or near the end he was nearly always ahead of the leading group, setting the pace for them and the other 169 starters from the first half mile. Once a lead of 150 yards was established, he settled into a comfortable stride, and left those struggling behind to fight for second place. First D. Hopkinson (Clayton-le-Moors H.), who later dropped back and finished twelfth, and then B. Cooke, J. N. Wright, and R. Carroll all led, but P. Thompson fanned the embers of a sprint finish that was formidable many years ago and sped past the leaders in the last 440 yards.

1. R. Hill (Bolton U.H.), 35min. 8sec.; 2, P. Thompson (Manchester A.C.), 35min 37secs.; 3, J. N. Wright (Wallasey A.C.) 35min. 39sec.; 4, R Carrol (Manchester A.C.) 35min. 41sec.; 5, B. Cooke (Hull H. & A.C.) 35min. 46sec.; 6, B. Woolford (Wallasey A.C.), 35min. 50sec.; 7, P. Hall (Barrow A.C.) 35min. 59sec; 8, J. F. Vear (Manchester A.C.), 36min. 8sec.; 9. J. C. Haslam (Bolton U.H.), 36min. 28sec.; 10, B. Jackson (Bolton U.H.), 36min. 32sec.

Team result 1, Manchester A.C. (2, 4, 8). 14 points; 2, Bolton U.H. (1, 9, 10) 20; 3, Wallasey A.C. (3, 6, 22) 31: 4, Barrow A.C., 52: 5 Blackpool & Fylde A.C., 54; 6, Clayton-le-Moors H. 58.
